This is a theoretical and empirical course in modern industrial organization Many real world firms are trying to manipulate their rivals or consumers We will study the functioning of the markets by analyzing behavior of non competitive firms We will learn the tools of microeconomics and game theory to understand how firms make their decisions based on strategic thinking We will use these theoretical insights to explain observed features of particular markets and industries Then using the Korean data you will write a research proposal The proposal should contain a research question within IO but your topic need not be one that is specifically covered in this course There will be one required meeting with me to discuss your topic in early October Thereafter you will have two presentations about (1) the idea and research agenda in late October and (2) your project in December Finally you will submit the written documentation of your research proposal in last week of semester
